An oil company is exploring two Arctic sites for oil. The needed blasting at the first site rocks Santa Claus' North Pole village. He realizes that any blasting at the second site will destroy his home. He enlists the aid of a woman and her children to convince her husband (who works for the company) that the first site is where the oil they want is. Along the way, Santa explains all his secrets in delivering presents all around the world.

It's Christmas Eve. Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), a toy company executive, collects his little son Charlie from his ex-wife. When Santa Claus arrives on his roof, Scott's shout startles Santa into a fatal fall. The body disappears, leaving only the famous red suit. Cherie and Jack take in three orphan boys when Jack's aunt, Rita, renovates the orphanage. Although Jack is hesitant to house the boys, Cherie thinks it's a great idea since they cannot have children of their own.

Devoted father and husband, Tom Chandler dies, in a car accident, but appears as a ghost to his teenage son Jonathan. Now single mother, Susan Chandler tries to concentrate on her reporter job and dismisses dad's ghost, but allows the school counselor, Kevin Harrison, to work with Jonathan. Dad and Jonathan arrange for Susan to enter a radio show's dating game, and conclude that only Kevin, a widower and coach in Jonathan's former favorite sport ice-hockey, will do as his step-dad, while she leans towards lawyer Greg Roberts.

Sent to a small town in Maine just before the Christmas holidays, Max immediately gets to work on what he thinks is his current assignment : to help Sally Reid earn enough money so that she can adopt her orphaned brother Jimmy. Unfortunately, it turns out that Max has goofed : instead of Sally, he was supposed to come to the aid of Karl Hoffman, a misguided young man who is poised to lay off the artisans working at the glass factory run by his Uncle Gregory, an East German refugee. Thus it is that Max's heavenly superior, an attractive angel named Jo, descends to earth to untangle the mess. Subsequently, however, both Max and Jo come to realize that the ultimates fates of Sally and Karl are inextricably intertwined.

After leaving the Army after W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General.

The families collide-oops-meet the week of Hanukah just before Christmas in Madison, Wisconsin. It's a wild, whacky ride of good intentions and missteps as the two families try in vain to respect each others' traditions. It's not long before Rebecca and Henry learn the hardest part about being married might be dealing with each other's in-laws.
